What are School Governors?

Governors are legally-appointed volunteer advisors who support and challenge the school’s leadership. They contribute to the strategic decisions and direction of the school and have an effective input towards the educational achievement of its pupils.  The Governing Body’s overriding responsibility is to work in partnership with the Headteacher to promote continuous improvement in the school’s performance.   The Governing Body provide an overview and Governance, but do not deal with the day to day management of the school.

Role and responsibilities

Governing Bodies are the key decision makers and vision setters in every school, helping to set the school’s aims and values.  Their core strategic functions include:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  2. Holding the Headteacher to account
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school

The responsibilities of the Governing Body include:

  • Being involved in planning the future direction of the school
  • Setting policies and procedures
  • Monitoring the school’s budget
  • Recruiting and appointment of new staff
  • Being accountable for the performance of the school
  • Promoting high standards of educational attainment
  • Ensuring targets are set for pupil progress
  • Taking general responsibility for the conduct of the school
  • Making sure the school provides for all its pupils, including those with special educational needs
  • Dealing with serious complaints

Our Governing Body consists of

  • Two parent governors
  • One local authority governor
  • One staff governor
  • One headteacher
  • Five Co-opted governors
  • Total number of governors is ten.

Parent governor

Parents of pupils at the school, elected by parents.  Any parent or person with parental responsibility, or carer of a registered pupil of the school at the time of the election is eligible to stand for election as a parent governor.

LA governor

Co-opted Governors (Community Governors)

Appointed by the governing body.

Staff Governors

Headteacher plus one member of staff elected by all the staff at the school.

The standard term of office for a Governor is four years.  The Chair and Vice-Chair are elected annually at the first meeting of each new academic year.

Welcome from the Chair

On behalf of our Governors, a very warm welcome to our school website and our Governors’ page.

As Chair of the Governing Body, and as a parent, I am particularly proud to support our school’s high standards of education and achievements.

All of our Governors are passionate about the school and are committed to providing every child with the very best education, opportunities and experiences that the school can offer.  We feel privileged to support the Headteacher and staff in delivering the school’s vision, aims and values.

I hope that you find the governor information helpful.  We are always keen to hear your views and would be happy to discuss any concerns or ideas you may have.  So, if you would like to get in touch, please do not hesitate to contact the School Governors via our Clerk to Governors, Caroline McFarlane at clerk@hntps.org.

Letter from Governors to all parents and carers re absence 2019 (1)

How to become a Governor

We actively encourage our parents to become Governors and when a vacancy arises all parents are notified and given the opportunity to volunteer.

Elections are held if more than one person is interested for each vacancy. We have a great relationship with parents and there are always people who are prepared to give their time to join us on the Governing Body.

You don’t need any special skills to become a Governor, apart from a wish to help the school, but if you do have any particular talents that you think might be useful then please let us know. Training is provided for all Governors.

If you are reading this and live nearby, but are not a parent of one of our pupils, that doesn’t prevent you from being a Governor – if you let us know of your interest then we can keep your contact details in the school office. All Governors must be able to pass a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

If you are interested in becoming a school Governor and you would like to find out more, you can contact Caroline McFarlane, Clerk to Governors at clerk@hntps.org.

We currently have one vacancy.
